In the Gap

What does it mean to inherit an artistic legacy without becoming its imitation? IN THE GAP without imitation brings together the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Rick Begnaud, and James MacDonell in a compelling examination of artistic influence, innovation, and the evolving language of contemporary art. Rather than presenting legacy as repetition, this landmark volume explores the fertile space between generations—the creative "gap" where ideas are transformed, challenged, and reimagined.Richly illustrated with paintings, assemblages, mixed-media works, archival photographs, and critical essays, the book examines how Begnaud and MacDonell engage with the spirit of experimentation that defined Rauschenberg's revolutionary practice while forging distinctly independent artistic voices. Their work demonstrates that the most meaningful artistic inheritance is not stylistic resemblance, but the courage to embrace curiosity, risk, material innovation, and intellectual freedom.Drawing upon the traditions of postwar American art, Neo-Dada, assemblage, abstraction, and conceptual practice, In the Gap without imitation investigates themes of memory, process, chance, materiality, authorship, and cultural history. Through scholarly essays, archival documents, and visual dialogues, the publication offers fresh perspectives on the ways artistic ideas evolve across generations without sacrificing originality. In the Gap without imitation is an exploration of mentorship, creative independence, and the enduring relevance of experimentation in contemporary art. It challenges conventional narratives of influence by arguing that artistic legacy is measured not by imitation, but by the ability to extend a conversation into new cultural and historical contexts. Designed for artists, collectors, curators, scholars, museum professionals, and students of contemporary art, this beautifully produced volume illuminates the dynamic relationship between one of America's most influential artists and two contemporary practitioners whose work demonstrates that innovation flourishes in the space between homage and invention.
