Troubled teenager Skyler Canter Reems is the newest resident at a mental institute known as "The Fat." She has seriously hurt herself, and her mother can't accept the reason why. In The Fat, Skyler befriends a motley group of young women who've seen much harder times, and she learns that insanity comes in varying shades of blue. In their odd way, the teens learn to care for one another whether they like it or not. As Skyler copes and builds friendships, her life takes turns she can't control.
