Imaginative Pursuits: An Artist's Notebook invites readers into film director Paula Markovitch's most intimate creative world. In these pages - memories, reflections, short stories, and fragments - she moves fluidly between childhood recollections, moments from youth, and fictional episodes that often feel more vivid than conscious experience. The book can be read as autofiction, as the memoir of an artist, or as a kind of travel diary.Readers encounter both the author's early life under the shadow of Argentina's dictatorship and her later creative journey as a screenwriter and filmmaker. The book also becomes a manifesto on the power of images, storytelling, and language, and on the increasingly invisible role of the screenwriter in an industry that marginalizes the author and strips away identity and authorship.Imaginative Pursuits speaks directly and sincerely to anyone interested in cinema, and especially to writers or aspiring writers. Markovitch argues that narration is a living experience: those who write - particularly for film - must unleash their creativity, avoiding formulas and escaping the rigid instruction manual approach of conventional screenwriting. As Pablo Dotta writes in the prologue: "Imaginative Pursuits is the work journal of a filmmaker in full action. Its uncertainties ensnare us, its certainties make us blush, and its sincerity entreats us to face, head on, our ghosts and the poetry we carry within us."
