In Image + Likeness, the much-anticipated follow-up to his National Poetry Series-winning debut Tender Headed, Olatunde Osinaike presents a formally inventive meditation on how Black life is seen, recorded, and distorted--examining the camera as a vessel and the image as a site where history, memory, and harm collide.
Braiding together four exhibits that span confession, religion, economy, and desire, these vivid, meditative poems trace the shifting architecture of intimacy in Black life, most clearly revealed in moments when dominant ways of seeing shape how relationships, belonging, and possibility are understood.
Moving through a range of forms--from tanka to abecedarian to the invented "rendition"--the collection explores exploitation and the labor of being perceived fairly, pressing against both idealization and self-erasure. With lyric as its throughline, Image + Likeness considers how acts of recording determine what is seen and what is obscured.

Originally from the West Side of Chicago, Olatunde Osinaike is a Nigerian-American poet, essayist, and software developer. Selected in 2024 as the Georgia Author of the Year in Poetry, he is the author of Image + Likeness (forthcoming from Alice James Books) and Tender Headed (Akashic Books), winner of the 2022 National Poetry Series, shortlisted for the Society of Midland Authors Award in Poetry and Nossrat Yassini Poetry Prize. He is also author of the limited edition chapbooks Speech Therapy (TAR) and The New Knew (Thirty West). Other honors include winner of the Lucille Clifton Poetry Prize and Frontier Industry Prize, semifinalist for the Discovery Poetry Prize, and honorable mention for the Ploughshares Emerging Writer's Award in Poetry. His work has appeared, or is forthcoming, in Literary Hub, The Slowdown, American Poetry Review, Best New Poets, 20.35 Africa, Obsidian, Wildness, Hunger Mountain, and elsewhere. His work has received fellowships and support from Poets & Writers, Hurston/Wright Foundation, Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, and the Institute for the Study of Global Racial Justice at Rutgers University. He received his BS in Engineering from Vanderbilt University and his MS in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University. He lives in Atlanta with his wife and would like to thank you.
