I SURVIVED BY MISTAKE is a powerful and lyrical testimony from Mohammed Assaf, a young Palestinian writer and survivor from Gaza. It is not a conventional memoir, but a visceral collection of reflections written on the edge of silence, born from the experience of living through a devastating war and a love that both illuminated and fractured his world. The book explores a profound existential crisis: what does it mean to survive when so much of what defined you - your home, your loved ones, your sense of self - has been destroyed? Assaf writes with unflinching honesty about his internal battles, navigating a landscape where the roar of bombs is matched only by the turmoil of a broken heart. His prose masterfully intertwines the personal and the political, detailing the suffocating reality of displacement, famine, and the erosion of dignity in a land under siege. Through a series of fragmented narratives, he dissects the complexities of a tumultuous relationship, examining the pain of betrayal, the chains of jealousy, and the haunting agony of love that persists in the face of alienation. Simultaneously, he chronicles the daily, grinding horror of war: the search for bread, the loss of family, and the struggle to maintain one's humanity amidst overwhelming chaos. I SURVIVED BY MISTAKE is a testament to the enduring resilience of the human spirit. It is a scream against silence, a mourning for all that was lost, and a stark, poetic witness to the intimate catastrophes that unfold when love and war become intertwined. This is the raw, unfiltered voice of a survivor, offering a profound and unforgettable glimpse into a world where survival itself feels like a mistake.
