The HEATS project was devoted to the development of advanced computational tools for the simulation of atmospheric super-orbital and lunar re-entry flows in the ionization regime. The project addressed key challenges in hypersonic aerothermodynamics, including high-temperature gas effects, chemical non-equilibrium, dissociation and ionization processes, plasma formation, radio-wave absorption, and the interaction between high-enthalpy flows and Thermal Protection System materials.
