Hammerhead Sharks: Biology, Ecology and Conservation

Editat de Claire Coiraton, James T. Ketchum
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 mar 2027
Hammerhead sharks are among the most recognizable and fascinating families of sharks for both scientists and the general public. They include 11 different species that are unique in terms of morphology, sensory biology, behaviours, and life-history traits that distinguish them from other sharks. However, many of these species possess life-history characteristics that limit their capacity to recover from excessive fishing pressure, while habitat degradation and other human impacts further increase their vulnerability.  These features have contributed to drastically limit their chances to recover from excessive capture and degradation of their habitats and significantly increase their vulnerability.
Despite their ecological and economic importance, information needed to support effective management and conservation has often been fragmented or lacking. This book brings together current scientific knowledge on the biology and ecology of all 11 living hammerhead shark species, while also examining their socioeconomic and cultural importance across the world. The 16 chapters by more than 55 expert authors from around the globe provide insights into their vulnerability to global threats, examine conservation challenges, and explore different approaches for improving their conservation status, while showcasing breakthrough research and case studies of hammerhead sharks in different parts of the world.
Hammerhead Sharks takes a holistic approach that integrates biology, ecology, fisheries, conservation and management with socioeconomic and cultural knowledge, enabling decision-making that recognises both the vulnerability of hammerhead sharks and the needs and values of society.

Recenzii

"Their hammer-shaped heads make them the most recognisable sharks on Earth, yet most are threatened and the others remain poorly known. Drawing on a global team of experts, this book lays out everything known about the biology, ecology and conservation of all 11 hammerhead species."
Nicholas K Dulvy, FRSC, Distinguished Professor & Canada Research Chair, Department of Biological Sciences, Simon Fraser University

Notă biografică

Claire Coiraton
Claire Coiraton is a marine biologist, shark researcher and fisheries sustainability consultant based in La Paz, Mexico. For more than a decade, her work has focused on the intersection of marine ecology, fisheries and conservation, with a particular emphasis on understanding how life-history traits, habitat use, fishing pressure and environmental change shape the vulnerability and resilience of shark populations. She holds a PhD from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where her research on the scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) in the Mexican Pacific integrated life history, age and growth, spatial ecology, nursery habitat use and fisheries interactions to identify critical life stages, habitats and periods of greatest vulnerability.
Her career has since expanded from academic research into applied fisheries management and conservation. She has led and supported Fishery Improvement Projects, worked directly with fishing communities and multidisciplinary stakeholders, and contributed to assessments and audits under international sustainability and responsible-fishing frameworks, including the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), MarinTrust and the Responsible Fishing Vessel Scheme (RFVS). She has also supported technical risk assessments for threatened sharks in Mexico, translating biological, fisheries and trade evidence into conservation-relevant recommendations.
This progression—from studying hammerhead sharks in the field to working within the fisheries and governance systems that shape their future—has defined her integrative approach to conservation. It directly shaped the conception and interdisciplinary scope of Hammerhead Sharks: Biology, Ecology and Conservation, bringing together science, fisheries, human dimensions and management to provide a global foundation for understanding and conserving the Sphyrnidae.

James T. Ketchum
James T. Ketchum is a marine ecologist and shark researcher based in La Paz, Mexico. He holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of California, Davis, and is co-founder and Director of Marine Conservation at Pelagios Kakunjá, where he also directs the Biotelemetry and Ecology of Marine Megafauna Laboratory. His research focuses on shark movement ecology, habitat use and biotelemetry in the Mexican Pacific and Eastern Tropical Pacific. His work has included studies of scalloped hammerheads in the Galápagos Islands, shark movements around oceanic islands, and research projects on white sharks, bull sharks and hammerhead nursery areas in the Gulf of California.
