Shivendra Nath Rai did his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Geophysics in 1975 and 1986, respectively from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. Since January 1977 he carried out research work in the field of hydrogeology at the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute till his superannuation in June 2014 as Chief Scientist. He also taught hydrogeology as Hon. Visiting Fellow in the department of Earth Sciences at I.I.T., Roorkee. He with his co-authors have developed a new generation of predictive mathematical models to describe dynamic behaviour of water table in response to realistic time varying recharge and/or pumping. Such information is essential for selection of an appropriate scheme of recharge and/or pumping out of many proposed schemes to achieve the preset objectives of sustainable development and management of groundwater resources. He and his colleague Dr. Ajay Manglik obtained a US Patent on “Method of predicting the dynamic behaviour of water table in an anisotropic unconfined aquifer having general time varying recharge rate from multiple rectangular recharge basins. He leads geophysical surveys in draught prone areas for delineation, development and management of groundwater resources.
He published several research papers in reputed SCI journals and chapters in books. He served as a Vice-President of International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) from 2004 to 2012, and President of the Indian National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (INC-IAH) from 2012 to 2014. For his exemplary works he is awarded National Hydrology Award, National Mineral Award, NGRI-AHI Indian National Hydrology Lecture Award and Life time achievement award of the INC-IAH. He is Fellow of A.P. Academy of Sciences, Indian Geophysical Union, Indian Association of Hydrologists, Indian Water Resources Society, Telangana Academy of Sciences and Association of Global Groundwater Scientists.
