As a young student at Columbia Bible College in 1950, Bernice felt God calling her to serve Him as a missionary in Africa. For over thirty-six years she served in the Belgian Congo (later Zaire), teaching, discipling and encouraging her beloved African students. At the end of her years of missionary service, she came home facing an ongoing struggle with cancer.
