In Kevin Prufer’s eleventh collection, Good People, the uneasy forces of history, imagination, and memory collide. As morally dubious characters remember only the events that suit their stories best, narratives fracture and decades collapse across a single line break. Published under the setting sun of the American dream, these poems exhume the mundane violences that belie our modern comforts: A television broadcasts scenes of war into an otherwise cozy living room; a kitten, asleep in a truck engine, perishes at the turn of the ignition. Shifting effortlessly from brutal to tender, darkly comic to philosophical, Good People asks us, good people ourselves, what our relationship to history must be when “the present has nothing to say back to it / that it can hear.”

Poet, editor, and publisher Kevin Prufer’s recent books include The Fears, winner of the 2024 Rilke Prize, The Art of Fiction, Churches, and How He Loved Them, which was longlisted for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize. His work has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lannan Foundation, and the Poetry Society of America, and appeared on best-of-the-year lists from The New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and others. Prufer has also edited or coedited many volumes, including New European Poets; Into English: Poems, Translations, Commentaries; and Literary Publishing in the Twenty-First Century. He teaches in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston, where he codirects The Unsung Masters Series, a book series devoted to bringing great but little-known authors to new generations of readers. He is the 2026–2027 Poet Laureate of Texas and currently lives in Houston, Texas.
