Is anything sacred anymore? In a world of surfaces--of screens, commodities and simulations--can anything, again, have anydepth?
Friedrich Nietzsche anticipated this disenchanted postmodern condition of ours, when he infamously heralded the death of transcendence. "God is dead" he declared--adding, "And we have killed him."
So begins this contemporary epic, as humanity does just this--waging a brutal war in Heaven coincident with the world wars of the 20th century. Led by voices condemning human suffering and championing Reason, millions arise to overthrow religion--and prove victorious.
However, unlike in the philosopher's vision, God does notremaindead. Rather, the cultural, spiritual, and ecological devastation that ensue after the murder lead the speaker of the poem--a former singer in Heaven's choirs--to seek for God again. This journey will lead into the underworld and back, as the poet attempts to resurrect meaning and a sense of the sacred for a 21st century world.
