Global Media Activism: Practices, Pedagogy, Publics: Rethinking Globalizations
Autor Hilde C. Stephansenen Limba Engleză Hardback – 3 mar 2027
Based on fifteen years of research, it takes as its central case study the World Social Forum, a global civil society gathering that has met regularly since 2001 under the slogan ‘another world is possible’. Resisting the tendency to focus only on the newest technologies, the book takes a longer-term view, exploring diverse forms of media activism that have developed since the turn of the millennium – with particular attention to practices that have emerged from the global South.
The book combines theoretical rigour with rich ethnographic detail through drawing on decolonial theory, critical pedagogy, and media practices. Its organising concept is that of ‘emancipatory global publics’: communities constituted across borders through media and communication practices, oriented not merely towards inclusion in dominant publics but towards the articulation of alternatives to prevailing social, economic, and political orders.
Global Media Activism: Practices, Pedagogy, Publics offers a nuanced view of the role of communication in social movements and will be of interest to activists, students and scholars of social movements, media activism, and global politics.

Recenzii
"Global Media Activism is an analytically-sharp and theoretically-sophisticated contribution to the study of progressive social movements as producers of knowledge for alternative worlds beyond the rapacious one in which we live and the centrality of media and communications to that project. Empirically-focused on the World Social Forum, it offers a broad conceptualization of diverse activist media practices extending beyond the digital, their evolution through the early decades of the 21st century, and their centrality to constructing emancipatory global publics. Stephansen’s account is attuned to unequal power relations arising from capitalism, colonialism and patriarchy, and from geographic place and scale, how these condition activist media practices, and their implications for the construction of emancipatory global publics. This is a book that deserves careful attention by scholars of media and communications, social movements and democratic theory."
Janet Conway, Professor of Sociology, Brock University“Finally, a study about the World Social Forum that takes communication seriously! Stephansen’s book emerges at the intersection of three exciting theoretical paths: decolonial efforts to ‘provincialize Europe,’ critical pedagogy, and media practice. As a Latin American media scholar, I found particularly provoking the book’s emphasis on the centrality of knowledge production and the emancipatory potential of critical dialogue—that moment when a human creature appropriates their own voice, decides they have something to say, and move toward action, toward transforming the world around them, thus becoming a human person. Hilde and I share the conviction that one of the most valuable elements of social movements and emancipatory activism is their ability to open sites where new ways of being in the world can emerge. The book is a fascinating ethnography of the role communication and media play in making this happen.”
Clemencia Rodríguez, Professor of Media and Communication, Temple University“A new world is emerging, but maybe not the world most people want. No recent movement has expressed the desire for a different world better than the World Social Forum. Stephansen’s richly detailed and comprehensive account of the WSF’s two-decade evolution recovers for today’s readers the importance of the WSF’s always radical approach to media activism. Focussing on how new forms of communication and knowledge can be built, rather than mere platform affordances, this book is much needed and highly recommended.”
Nick Couldry, Professor of Media, Communications and Social Theory Emeritus, London School of Economics and Political Science
