General Jack Vessey (1922–2016), tenth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was one of the longest-serving soldiers in the U.S. Army. John Morris chronicles the extraordinary career of a man who joined the Minnesota National Guard as a seventeen-year-old private and went on to hold every rank in the army of his day.
The fact that the United States won the Cold War is both an accepted fact and an often overlooked accomplishment. It was not inevitable. It was engineered by heroic men and women with iron wills and steely determination. One of those heroes was the quiet, self-effacing General Vessey. His rise from private to chairman of the Joint Chiefs is an inspirational story. His focus on rebuilding a “hollow military” and defeating the Soviet Union, at a time when many accepted the superpower status of the USSR as an eternal fact, is informative for those attempting to do the same in the face of rising Chinese power today.
From General Vessey’s remarkable five decades of service in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and the War on Terrorism in the 1980s to his most difficult mission, that of accounting for prisoners of war and those missing in action from the Vietnam conflict, Morris highlights Vessey’s stellar character along with his moral and physical courage in the most challenging times of his generation.

Recenzii

“General Jack Vessey personified the best of America’s incredible military. This is the story of how a humble man from humble beginnings became one of the most revered leaders in our nation’s history. It’s an important lesson and reminder for us all.”—Tim Pawlenty, former governor of Minnesota

“John Morris captures in detail the humility, dedication to the service member, character, and the religious foundation of this American hero. This biography describes the immense impact General Jack Vessey had on the modernization of the military, the strengthening of the NATO alliance, and the curtailing of Soviet expansionism—from which we still reap the benefits today. The author has clearly discovered the courage, candor, character, and quiet confidence of this soldier’s soldier. This book should be on the required reading list of every ROTC program, service academy, senior service college, and noncommissioned officer course.”—Bvt. Lt. Gen. Richard C. Nash, USA (Ret.)

“Quiet, unassuming, and the consummate U.S. Army professional, Jack Vessey worked closely and effectively with the U.S. State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency to counter Soviet, Chinese, and North Vietnamese military aggression in the vulnerable kingdom of Laos during the final years of the Vietnam War. This remarkable tribute to General Vessey provides rare insights into America’s clandestine struggle against communism.”—Timothy N. Castle, CIA historian (retired)

“John Morris depicts the life of General Jack Vessey accurately: God, country, family, and a good chainsaw. And he knew when to hold ’em and when to fold them. He had steadfast dedication to his beliefs and a brilliant, strategic mind. This is an inspirational and educational book.”—Sam Krawczyk, grandson of Jack Vessey
