The year is 1964 and 19 year old Benson Lee Powell, Jr is finally graduating from High School, working part-time and struggling to write while living with an alcoholic mother, an older free spirited sister and a younger brother with chronic health problems. In honest prose this story unfolds and demonstrate the human spirit of survival and self-determination. It is a tale of struggle that is sure to become a classic. "The author captures the raw emotions of this family as it experiences years of dysfunction. Their path thru life is filled with tragedy after tragedy, and you feel their pain as you root for wholeness and well being to take center stage. New author Kenya Spear craftily spins a tale of family turmoil enriched with brutal honesty, that captures the reader's heart from the very first page."
Sibyl Renae Kerr, Playwright and Producer
"In her debut novel Kenya Spear manages to get thru to the heart of a family's complex relationships. In language both spare and poetic, she delves into the heartbreak, the betrayals, and the nightmare specter of dreams deferred that hangs over all. Yet the family each in their own way wages a valiant struggle to come to terms with their private demons and recognize that the human spirit is much stronger than they imagined."
-Grace Edwards, Author of The Viaduct, The Mali Anderson Mysteries, and In the Shadow of the Peacock
"First time author Kenya Spear provides a compelling story full of intrigue, courage and strength of a child who rises above the dysfunctional behavior of his family. Each character is thoroughly presented which makes you feel as though you know each one of them personally. This makes for a very good read."
