"Settjes analysis is noteworthy for three reasons. First, while he sensibly identifies divisions between conservative and liberal American Christians he realises that such categories are imperfect. There was in-fighting across the religious board and when it came to adjudicating the Vietnam War, some members of some churches bucked the prevailing interpretative trend. Secondly, Settje recognises in an important resources but he also works hard to discern the opinions of the ordinary people into the pews. Thirdly, Settje appreciated the flux, and this is crucial. Some periodicals and churches adopted an adamantine position but many others shifted ground according to circumstances. By the early 1970s previous supporters of US intervention had begun to have their doubts. This reflected in the outpourings of various religious presses.... this magnificent book leaves us in no doubt that there was some significant shaping going on. - Jonathan Wright, Catholic Herald, February 24th 2012
