Expanding Senses Using Neurotechnology

Autor Ujwal Chaudhary
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 20 aug 2026

Expanding Senses Using Neurotechnology – Volume 3: Sensory Restoration and Beyond explores cutting-edge advancements in restoring and enhancing the five primary senses: vision, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Building on the theoretical foundations and practical applications introduced in Volumes 1 and 2, this volume examines sensory restoration technologies and their transformative roles in treating loss of sensation and highlights further applications in military, space and everyday life.

The volume begins with an overview of the sensory system, addressing the challenges of impairment and the promise of neurotechnology for sensory augmentation and substitution. For vision, it explores retinal prostheses and bionic eyes. In hearing, cochlear implants and AI-enhanced hearing are explored. The chapter on touch highlights tactile feedback in neuroprosthetics, restoring fine motor control for neuropathies and limb loss. Smell and taste restoration are explored through olfactory implants, artificial flavor generation, and sensory substitution techniques for anosmia and ageusia. In addition, two chapters provide examples of how neurotechnology is used in military and space technology. The book concludes with a chapter on neurotechnology in our daily lives.

Intended for students, researchers, and professionals in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and related fields, this text serves as both a technical guide and an ethical roadmap to the future of sensory restoration and augmentation.

Notă biografică

Ujwal Chaudhary, Ph.D.

Dr. Chaudhary is the co-founder and CEO of neurotechnology startup “BrainPortal Technologies GmbH” based in Mannheim, Germany. He has been working towards the development of several kinds of brain-computer interface (BCI), namely, intracortical BCI (iBCI), electroencephalogram (EEG) /Electrooculogram (EOG), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) based BCIs to investigate and provide a means of communication to patients in locked-in state (LIS) and completely locked-in state (CLIS). He pushed the limit of BCIs; for the first time in history, the team enabled complete sentence formation by someone in CLIS using an iBCI.

He studied Bachelor of Technology in Biomedical Engineering; he was awarded the gold medal for scoring the highest rank. He graduated with Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Biomedical Engineering department at Florida International University, Miami, USA in 2013. He was awarded the “Outstanding doctoral degree graduate award” for his doctoral dissertation. After his graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher/group leader at the University of Tuebingen.
