Everyday China: Microhistories of Chinese People and Culture: China Perspectives

Autor Di Wang
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 29 dec 2026
This book revisits China’s history by shifting the focus from macro narratives to micro perspectives to reveal how ordinary people shaped Chinese civilization through their everyday lives and experiences.
Moving beyond traditional historical approaches centered on emperors, wars, revolutions, and elites, the study intertwines the intimate microhistories of ordinary individuals with broader national trends, creating a nuanced portrait of Chinese society. The author explores captivating topics, including population migration, the vibrant social world of teahouses and markets, rural clan structures, legal systems, spiritual practices, and the experiences of marginalized communities. Integrating insights from anthropology, sociology, and literature, the book transcends conventional historical methods, forming a holistic understanding of China’s complex social fabric and vividly bringing the past to life through ground-level accounts.
Meticulously crafted for accessibility, this comprehensive work welcomes scholars and students of Chinese history, as well as general readers with little prior knowledge of China. It offers an engaging window into the country’s dynamic history.
