The poignant, true story of Eve, a beautiful English woman who lived during the turbulent years of the twentieth century, through both World Wars and the Great Depression; in England and Marsabit, Africa. In early twentieth century England, with few rights and privileges for women, the only way a girl of humble birth can achieve security and advancement in society is through an advantageous marriage. Acutely aware of this, Mary "Eve" Evelyn Chadwick is determined to rise above her working-class origins. A conscientious worker, Eve also possesses beauty and grace, qualities that enhance her prospects.Married as a teenage bride to the austere, much older Captain Dillon, Eve is indeed elevated in society but finds marriage cold, and her husband distant. She embarks on a dangerous liaison with a charming man who lights a passion that Eve has not known possible. After a fateful accident, Eve finds herself in Strangeways Prison in Manchester and later appears in a scandalous trial in Hawkshead Magistrates' Court where her fate will be decided. Meticulously researched, Eve is rich in detail and delicately paced. The book contains moments of wisdom. It addresses themes of forgiveness, tolerance, love and acceptance. The surprising ending is a satisfying epitaph for this delightful, true story. A rare, sensitive gem.
