Lauren Heine, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized leader in green chemistry, sustainable materials management, and chemical hazard assessment. She is a Senior Fellow at the Green Science Policy Institute, where she leads the Detoxifying Plastics initiative. Earlier in her career, she served as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Chemistry Program and co-developed GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals and CleanGredients®, pioneering tools for identifying safer chemicals in products and manufacturing. She later co-founded ChemFORWARD, a global repository of chemical hazard assessments. Dr. Heine has helped bridge environmental chemistry, toxicology, and sustainable product design by advancing the use of chemical hazard assessment in supply chains and product development. She has contributed to international initiatives on sustainable materials management and safer chemistry, including work with the OECD, and has served on the California Green Ribbon Science Panel and as co-chair of Apple’s Green Chemistry Advisory Board. Her contributions to this edition strengthen its coverage of green chemistry, sustainable materials, and chemical hazard assessment.
Bradley A. Striebig, Ph.D. has more than 30 years of experience in environmental engineering education. He helped develop new programs focused on sustainability and environmental engineering at Unity Environmental University and James Madison University, where he is a Professor of Engineering. Dr. Striebig's expertise spans environmental chemistry, biological and physical treatment processes, sustainable engineering, life cycle assessment, and water resources. His research and teaching emphasize sustainable design, environmental restoration, engineering ethics, and global access to clean water. He has led or collaborated on more than $7 million in externally funded research and has worked on sustainability and water projects throughout Africa, India, and the United States. Dr. Striebig is also co-author of the award-winning textbook Engineering Applications in Sustainable Design and Development, recognized by the Textbook & Academic Authors Association with its Most Promising New Textbook Award. His contributions to this edition strengthen its integration of engineering principles, sustainability, and practical environmental problem-solving.
Margaret H. ("Meg") Whittaker, Ph.D., M.P.H., D.A.B.T., E.R.T., CBiol., F.R.S.B. is Managing Director and Chief Toxicologist of ToxServices LLC. She is an internationally recognized expert in toxicology, human health risk assessment, and chemical hazard assessment. Dr. Whittaker has pioneered the application of alternatives assessment and safer chemistry in product design and certification programs and has served as technical lead for the U.S. EPA Safer Choice Program, GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals, ChemFORWARD, and numerous international certification systems. Her expertise strengthens this edition through the integration of contemporary toxicology and human health considerations into environmental chemistry.
