“David Goethel’s Endangered Species keeps it real”
“You never die the way you expect to.”
So begins veteran fisherman David Goethel’s memoir EndangeredSpecies; Chronicles of the Life of a New England Fisherman and the F/V EllenDiane.  The inspiration and the ironybehind that opening sentence is, after decades of the sorts of brushes withmortality that come from year-round fishing, it was a 20’ fall off the HamptonState Pier in Portsmouth, NH in September of 2010 that almost killed DavidGoethel.
The same grit and determination that fueled his fishingcareer kept Goethel alive – and though his injuries were substantial, heinsisted on being on hand (in a wheelchair) for a New England FisheryManagement Council meeting just days later where he knew his vote would make adifference.
By the following June, David was back at the helm of hisbeloved 44’ Ellen Diane with youngest son Daniel in the stern.  David may have had limited mobility, but hedidn’t need the help of a walker to land a nearly-9000-pound bag of codfishafter a 30-minute tow.
If it was anyone else’s story, telling you all that would bethe ultimate spoiler, giving away a key moment in the book; in the case of EndangeredSpecies, it’s simply the way David Goethel has always lived his life.
Don’t mistake his drive for tunnel vision, however; as EndangeredSpecies makes clear, David and wife Ellen are believers in science (whendone right) and in protecting the resource (as well as those who fish withrespect).  Endangered Speciesis an engaging read for anyone who cares about the ocean; it’s a story toldwith openness, honesty, and conviction that will both entertain and inform.
David Goethel kept it real during his fishing career (hemade his last trip in 2022, although he’s still involved in fisheriesmanagement); he’s still keeping it real as an author.

“Ifyou’ve been out there, read this book. If you haven’t been out there, nevermind watching “reality television” shows – you should read this book, as well.David Goethel is the real thing: a one-of-a-kind mix of grit, guts, determination, passion for his livelihood, and respect for the resource. Hisstory has as much to do with the future of commercial fishing as it does itspast.”
—Brian Robbins, senior contributing editor, Commercial Fisheries News

"New England fisheries have a rich history but arefaced with several challenges that jeopardize their sustainability.Fortunately, we have fishermen like David Goethel, who dedicated his life tofishing, collaborative research, and stakeholder-driven management and give ushope for creative solutions. I can’t think of a person who taught me more aboutthe marine ecosystem, fish biology, fisheries, and effective policies thanDavid. I expect this book will give us the insights we need to sustain thefisheries he loves."
—SteveCadrin, PhD, University of Massachusetts”

“David’sbook makes you feel like you are personally on the crew of his fishing boatthe Ellen Diane. As a reporter, when I had a question about fishing, he was thecredible source.”
—RogerWood, associate publisher and podcast producer, InDepthNH

“Asa ground fish “non permit holder” I learned a lot from David about dealing withthe complexity of Federal fairness while watching him work so hard to survivefrom the North Atlantic fishery.Yet, David Goethel most importantly showed me by example how one dealswith impossible road blocks in commercial fishing and personal life. Read DaveGoethel’s Endangered Species. It’s tough to put down.”
—John Bell, Mayor of the Cityof Gloucester, MA, 2002-2008,chair and a founder ofThe Northeast Seafood Coalition

“DaveGoethel’s book tells a compelling story of his lifelong love of the ocean andpassion for fishing. The book chronicles many fascinating stories of the joysand perils of his journey which starts as a young boy with his father on deepsea fishing boats and moves to being a captain of those same boats whilegetting a college degree in biology before becoming a commercial fisherman andeventually a fisheries manager. The author also provides a thought-provokingpicture of fisheries management and commercial fishing in New England andoffers potential solutions for conserving both the fish resources and the smallboat commercial fishermen who provide fresh fish for our tables.”
—DougGrout, retired fisheries manager and fisheries biologist
