Dressed for the Party: Fashion and Politics in Socialist Cuba: Dress Cultures

Autor Dr. or Prof María A. Cabrera Arús
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 13 mai 2027
Explore the politics of fashion in revolutionary and socialist Cuba as María A. Cabrera Arús traces how clothing served as a political technology, and how Cubans turned it into something the state never intended.

Dressed for the Party: Fashion and Politics in Socialist Cuba sets Cuba within a broader history of socialist material culture and Cold War cultural politics, showing that dress was central to the Cuban state's efforts to craft authority and identity - and equally central to the ways citizens adapted, resisted, and redefined those efforts. While the state promoted uniforms, workwear, and nationalist styles as symbols of equality and discipline, Cubans responded with ingenuity by turning to sewing, tailoring, black markets, and kinship networks to dress fashionably.

From the olive-green fatigues that defined Fidel Castro's leadership to the often-illegal circulation of foreign apparel, clothing was nationalized, rationed, and policed, but also improvised, repurposed, and desired. Drawing on rare archival materials, institutional records, personal diaries and interviews, and women's magazines, much of it gathered outside a state archive that remains closed, this book reveals fashion as central rather than marginal to post-1959 power, a technology that inscribed authority on bodies and a space of creativity, aspiration, and dissent.
