Double White Lines combines two novellas, bound together by the suburbs of Langarrin and Henley in Western Australia. 'Henley is a town that lurks between the Freeway and the suburb of Langarrin towards the coast. It has a shifty appearance that's hard to define. It looks like it's been forgotten about by the municipal authorities for the last forty years; the kind of place where graffiti's just left, because it would be replaced immediately if they painted over it; rubbish blows around the streets and in the parks and is dumped in random places - parks, vacant lots, the shopping centre carpark - and is often left there for days. Occasionally a car is dumped at skewed angles on the median strip of the main road, doors left open; or is found burnt out where it had been bogged in the bush surrounding the suburb.' Freeway is a slice of life novella which follows a group of women in their early twenties, who are trying to find their way through the trials and joys that befall them. There's the artist Beattie, who is in love but must let it go; Bianca, who escapes from one mess, perhaps only to fall into another; and the twins, Gracie and Lou, brought up in chaos, who just want to escape their life situation, one way or another. In Lodged, a young woman named Arity returns from living interstate, brought home by family disaster. She must try to make peace with her family; but she finds herself distracted by a relationship with a man she doesn't know if she should trust.
