Dacă în Murder on the Pilgrims Way accentul cădea pe locații exclusiviste, aici mlaștinile Oare devin un personaj în sine, tăcut și amenințător. Ritmul este alert, punctat de avertismentele detectivului Mike McGuire, iar lipsa detaliilor violente lasă loc unei suspans psihologic rafinat. Este o evoluție clară față de primele volume, Pearl devenind o figură tot mai complexă, marcată de responsabilitatea față de fiul clientei sale și de propriile întrebări rămase fără răspuns.
