Defining Moments is for readers who have been knocked down by loss from natural disasters and the recession and who cannot afford psychotherapy. Dr. McArthur, a diplomate clinical psychologist with thirty-three years in private practice, sensitively share
I have long believed that people, as well as books, come into your life for a reason. There were so many times when I was facing an issue, and by merely picking up a book I found exactly the right answer to my dilemma right there. So I really should not be surprised that Defining Moments: Breaking Through Tough Times by Dorothea S. McArthur, PhD, ABPP was one of those life changing books for me, Yet thinking back I would be hard pressed to think of another instance of such completely clear and direct answer to the question I've been posing myself. This wonderful book carries an apt subtitle of Breaking Through Tough Times, and in its 66 chapters Dr. McArthur addresses an incredibly wide variety of issues, from more or less complex personal struggles to truly large societal issues which impact all of us. I was mesmerized by her writing from the very first page, and incredibly enough the story that touched me by far the most was the very first one. I sat spellbound for a very, very long time after finishing those powerful three pages, and felt so incredibly empowered. Sometimes it takes so very little to change the course of one's life, and I believe Dr. McArthur's writing has the power to change many lives. Her approach to issues is very down to earth and very practical, and while she points out a way for an individual to try and obtain counseling even if they think they would not be able to afford it, I believe that the book alone would help many of us handle our individual struggles better and become much happier after doing so. You can pick and choose the stories, or read them in order. Both approaches would work well in my opinion, but I would encourage you to read them all, even the ones that you might think you would or could not relate to. If my experience is anything to go by, you might end up truly surprised. Relevant, current, and enlightening, Defining Moments: Breaking Through Tough Times is a self-help book that I would recommend withouts
"Defining Moments" will help you through the struggles you face, offering hope and encouragement. I was quickly drawn into this book. I am amazed at the tidbits of wisdom that come out of each short chapter. While this book was written to assist the layperson, the professional will also find it an invaluable resource. --Readers Favorites
When tragedy strikes how will you cope with it? Will you admit you need help to deal with the crisis or will you attempt to deal with it on your own? Not everyone can afford a therapist even when they need one. Perhaps you were brought up in a family that believes that admitting you need help is a weakness. It takes strength to admit you need help and seek it. "Defining Moments; Breaking Through Tough Times" was written by Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Dorothea S. McArthur, to assist those who need help but cannot or will not seek it. There are 66 short chapters, divided into 8 sections, each on dealing with a different issue. I was quickly drawn into this book. I am amazed at the tidbits of wisdom that comes out of each chapter. Here are just a few of the lessons that McArthur shares with readers: "Take the blow, to accept help from others, to stay with the knockdown until it is understood, then to shake it off completely, letting it go, with forgiveness, and then, to go on, knowing more;" "The only real thing life does is dish out opportunities: " and "The best you can do is to find out who you are, do it and be honest about it." The third section of the book is based on cats and dogs. After moving her practice to her home where she had several animals, Dr. McArthur noticed her clients interacting with her pets. Often it was as if the animal knew what the client needed. People are constantly facing economic crisis, war, death, problems with their children or parents and any number of other situations that arise. They don't always know how to deal with the problems they face. Dorothea McArthur offers hope and encouragement. In "Defining Moments" she addresses the problems I have mentioned. Dr. McArthur doesn't stop there; she also addresses the problems facing our leaders. This book is written in Layman terms, easy to read and easy to understand. While this book was written to assist the layperson, the professional will also find it an invaluable resource. "De
