Examples and solutions are provided about taking care on oneself, relating to others, and parenting children. Dr McArthur emphasises integrity, honesty and ethical behaviour as a means of building depth-of-character, self-esteem and inner richness for "making a difference" with a successful life. This author also presents effective ways to examine unresolved childhood issues that may be causing anger, anxiety, or depression by looking at each persons unique life story to discover childhood survival skills needed to handle childhood adversity. These skills are then altered to successfully accommodate both present and future goals. Dr McArthur demonstrates ways in which time in nature and with pets can be a wise guide, leading the reader to kind, natural solutions for depression, insomnia, and loneliness. There are also special sections about being an impacting creative artist in a struggling world. Finally there are some simple effective ways each one of us can all contribute to reducing destructive aggression by replacing it with kindness and hope.

Recenzii

Defining Moments is for readers who have been knocked down by loss from natural disasters and the recession and who cannot afford psychotherapy. Dr. McArthur, a diplomate clinical psychologist with thirty-three years in private practice, sensitively share
When tragedy strikes how will you cope with it? Will you admit you need help to deal with the crisis or will you attempt to deal with it on your own? Not everyone can afford a therapist even when they need one. Perhaps you were brought up in a family that believes that admitting you need help is a weakness. It takes strength to admit you need help and seek it. "Defining Moments; Breaking Through Tough Times" was written by Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Dorothea S. McArthur, to assist those who need help but cannot or will not seek it. There are 66 short chapters, divided into 8 sections, each on dealing with a different issue. I was quickly drawn into this book. I am amazed at the tidbits of wisdom that comes out of each chapter. Here are just a few of the lessons that McArthur shares with readers: "Take the blow, to accept help from others, to stay with the knockdown until it is understood, then to shake it off completely, letting it go, with forgiveness, and then, to go on, knowing more;" "The only real thing life does is dish out opportunities: " and "The best you can do is to find out who you are, do it and be honest about it." The third section of the book is based on cats and dogs. After moving her practice to her home where she had several animals, Dr. McArthur noticed her clients interacting with her pets. Often it was as if the animal knew what the client needed. People are constantly facing economic crisis, war, death, problems with their children or parents and any number of other situations that arise. They don't always know how to deal with the problems they face. Dorothea McArthur offers hope and encouragement. In "Defining Moments" she addresses the problems I have mentioned. Dr. McArthur doesn't stop there; she also addresses the problems facing our leaders. This book is written in Layman terms, easy to read and easy to understand. While this book was written to assist the layperson, the professional will also find it an invaluable resource. "De
