Deep Brain Stimulation: Indications and Applications

Editat de Kendall H. Lee, Jin Woo Chang, Charles D. Blaha, Hojin Shin, Yoonbae Oh, Tyler Oesterle, Kristen M. Scheitler
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 13 oct 2026
Deep brain stimulation (DBS), as an interventive neurosurgical procedure, has now advanced beyond the treatment of movement disorders and now covers epilepsy, pain, and psychiatric disorders, too. Additionally, a better understanding of feedback-loop systems has led to the development of closed-loop devices such as the Medtronic Percept, which can measure electrophysiologic signals. Implementing these novel technologies will no doubt lead to further advances in our ability to help patients with both neurologic and psychiatric disorders. The interdisciplinary approach that most centers now use to provide DBS and neuromodulation is also important.
This textbook on DBS has been brought together by an international faculty to provide a forum that summarizes the history, indications, potential complications, and alternatives. Similar to the first edition, many of the chapters are a result of the work from the Mayo Clinic Neural Engineering and Precision Surgery Laboratories. The textbook will serve as an overview of the field for novices, remind experts of where we have been and where we are going, and inspire further developments in this field.

Notă biografică

Kendall H. Lee is a consultant in the Department of Neurologic Surgery with joint appointments in the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic and founder of NaviNetics, Inc, a medical device company.  He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2006. He is the Charles B. and Ann L. Johnson Professor of Neurosurgery and holds the academic rank of professor of biomedical engineering. He also founded Neural Engineering and Precision Surgery Laboratories and is currently a director emeritus at Mayo Clinic. Dr Lee is an expert on neurological disorders and sees patients with Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, Tourette syndrome, dystonia and other neurodegenerative diseases. His research focuses on developing deep brain stimulation for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, tremor, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and epilepsy. Beyond these movement disorders, his recent research has expanded into the field of psychiatric disorders, and he is actively developing new surgical frames to enhance both surgical precision and patient comfort.

Jin Woo Chang is a professor at Korea University Anam Hospital and the first president of Asian Pacific Society for Transcranial Focused Ultrasound Surgery. He specializes in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and his main interest is the neuromodulation of the central nervous system with new innovative techniques, such as electrical stimulation and focused ultrasound. Dr Chang has published more than 270 academic papers in SCI(E) journals around the world. He is a co-author of more than eight prominent neurosurgery textbooks and has authored countless domestic papers and textbooks. Currently Dr Chang serves as a section editor of the journal World Neurosurgery and an editorial board member of the journals Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and Neuromodulation.
