Dassault Rafale
Autor Salvador Mafé Huertasen Limba Engleză Hardback – 30 mai 2027
The twin-engine Rafale is classified as an 'omni-role' fighter, capable of performing air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance, nuclear deterrence, and carrier-based operations within a single sortie. This flexibility is enabled by advanced avionics, sensor fusion, and a highly integrated cockpit that reduces pilot workload.
Distinct from other European fighters of its era in that it is almost entirely built by one country, France, the Rafale is powered by two Snecma M88 turbofan engines, the Rafale offers excellent manoeuvrability, sustained supersonic performance, and short take-off capability, including operations from aircraft carriers. Its aerodynamic design features a delta wing and close-coupled canards, contributing to high agility and stability across a wide flight envelope.
First flown in July 1986, the Rafale can carry a diverse range of weapons, including Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, SCALP cruise missiles, precision-guided bombs, and anti-ship weapons. It is also nuclear-capable, forming a key part of France's airborne nuclear deterrent. There are three main variants: Rafale C single-seat land-based version, Rafale B twin-seat land-based version, and Rafale M single-seat carrier-based version.
The Rafale has been deployed in combat operations over Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq, and Syria, performing air superiority, close air support, reconnaissance, and precision attack missions. During Operation Harmattan over Libya in 2011, Rafales flew some of the first coalition strikes, enforcing no-fly zones and conducting deep-strike missions.
Internationally, the Rafale has achieved significant export success, with customers including India, Egypt, Qatar, Greece, Croatia, and the United Arab Emirates. Its combination of combat-proven performance, technological sophistication, and operational independence from US export restrictions has made the Dassault Rafale one of the most respected, advanced and capable Western warplanes of the 21st century.
