Growing up sheltered with middle-class parents in the kingdom of Kiel, Awbrey is a happy, carefree girl looking forward to one more year of school then marrying her beloved Eddy. Then a mysterious uncle shows up at her home with the news that the king has declared being magic illegal. Awbrey is dragged away from her safe, secure life into danger that escalates with every mile they travel, for reasons Awbrey does not understand. What has the new law to do with her? Awbrey believes she has no magic. In fact, she believes magic is just a faraway myth. Yet the danger is real. And so is the magic.
