Dalit Literary Discourse: Theoretical Perspectives, Notions and Nuances
Autor Dipendu Das, Asit Kanti Sarkaren Limba Engleză Hardback – 23 feb 2027
Through close readings of autobiographical works from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Punjab, the book demonstrates how Dalit writers challenge Brahmanical ideology, expose systemic oppression, and articulate alternative cultural discourses rooted in lived experience, dignity, and collective struggle. Building on Ambedkarite thought and Limbale's Dalit aesthetics, it develops an innovative theoretical framework integrating Gramsci's cultural hegemony, Foucault's power-knowledge nexus, Stuart Hall's identity politics, and Fraser's subaltern counterpublics. Analysing in detail texts like Limbale's The Outcaste, Valmiki's Joothan, Bama's Karukku, Biswas's Surviving in My World, and Madhopuri's Changiya Rukh, the book examines exploitation, resistance, identity reconstruction, gendered violence, and the reclaiming of cultural space.
This book will be of interest to students and researchers in Dalit Studies, Indian Literature, Postcolonial Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Gender Studies, and Comparative Literature. It will also appeal to the emerging Dalit middle class, followers of Dalit movements globally, and anyone engaged with questions of caste, counterculture, resistance, and social justice in contemporary India.
