It is 1985 communist Czechoslovakia. The countries behind the "Iron Curtain" are sensing that there is a change in the air; some of them more than others. But for Czechoslovakia, the government is stronger than ever following the hard core communist doctrine. The people's lives have been downgraded to tiny pieces of a puzzle that are manipulated by the government to create a giant picture for the glory of the leaders. A way out is risky and dangerous and few are willing to choose this path. Alex returns from his compulsory military service which kept him away from his family for a year only to realize that his marriage is over. The sudden death of his mother puts his life into an even deeper hole. Beginning his new job he soon realizes how predictable and dull life will be under the rules of the communist government. Ambitions and dreams do not exist in this society. In his deepest desperation he decides to leave the country. He soon finds out that his successful escape is significant, but only the first of many steps in his journey to the pursuit of happiness.
