Recenzii
“Flynn and Hurley’s exciting new volume provides opportune and relevant insights into the connections between creative writing and wellbeing. While previous books on this topic have largely concerned themselves with arguing the validity of using creative writing to promote wellbeing, Beyond Words takes vital next steps by considering what creative writing for wellbeing actually looks like in practice, including real world examples backed by rigorous theoretical and evidence-based supporting arguments from experts around the world.”
Dr Amelia Walker, Poet and Lecturer of Creative Writing, University of South Australia, AUS.
“A groundbreaking exploration of how creative writing can enhance physical, psychological, and social well-being. Health & social inequalities severely impact wellbeing, necessitating more person-centred approaches. This book offers perspectives from experts in the field on the transformative power of creative expression to support individuals. Bridging research, theory, and practice, the book provides invaluable insights for anyone interested in the healing potential of writing. This is essential reading for those committed to advancing holistic health through the arts.”
Dr Michelle Howarth, Professor in Health & Social Care, Edge Hill University, UK.
“This book is rich in insights for anyone exploring the intersection of creative writing and healing. Framed by interdisciplinary approaches, it illuminates how creative writing bridges art, mental health, biology, and social issues. The book also gives voice to the silenced and unheard by employing writing as a methodological approach. In all my years as a practice-based researcher composing poetry on diabetic heritage and healing, this stands out as the most comprehensive and inspiring resource I’ve encountered.”
Dr. Winda Setiasari, Senior Lecturer in English Applied Linguistics, Universitas Negeri Medan, IDN.
“This is a timely and fascinating collection of essays, vividly demonstrating the possibilities of creative writing and wellbeing at the intersections of various disciplines, and providing an insight into the work currently being done, as well as opening up paths for future exploration. The collection illustrates the importance of storytelling to our work, our lives, and our minds.”
Dr Sarah Dodd, East Asian Studies, University of Leeds, UK (Sarah Brooks,
The Cautious Traveller's Guide to the Wastelands, 2024, Weidenfeld and Nicolson).
“Today, innovative approaches to health and wellbeing are more important than ever. During my time as a psychologist with an NHS Crisis Team, I witnessed firsthand how creative expression can promote deeper self-understanding and be more transformative than traditional treatments. This insightful and timely collection examines the powerful wellbeing potential of creative writing, offering interdisciplinary perspectives that explore where, why and how such practices promote healing and resilience. A must-read for anyone interested in mental health and the arts.”
Dr Alan Corkish MA, MSc, PhD, Editorial Director, Erbacce Press, writer, editor, reviewer and critic from Liverpool, UK.
“A deft collection including an expansive range of multi-disciplinary, creative writing researchers. A timely contribution to contemporary debates focusing wellbeing, broadly conceived. Particularly impressive concentration on the very particular contribution creative writing processes and practices are capable of offering – encompassing non-pharmaceutical interventions facilitating wellbeing in broader health and wellbeing settings.”
Dr Julia Prendergast, Associate Professor, Swinburne University, President & Chair of the Australasian Association of Writing Programs.
