Climate Collapse?: Calls to Action From Around the World

Autor Mozhe Azar

In the lead up to what is bound to be another disappointing global climate conference in Brazil this November, in 'Climate Collapse? Calls to Action from Around the World', diverse global authors have come together to share their perspectives and solutions regarding the climate crisis and the deeper ecological crisis of modern civilisation, which some argue is leading to global societal collapse. Building on the success of their previous anthology Climate Adaptation, Arkbound is platforming an eclectic mix of writing styles and levels for this new collection, from a famous climate scientist, scholars and activists like Dr Bill McGuire, Brian Tokar and Dr Gail Bradbrook, to unknown and first-time authors from the Global South, who bring their vital lived experiences to bear on what is bound to be a challenging future ahead for all of us. Forget the climate COPs!'Climate Collapse? Calls to Action from Around the World' is a collection authored by an exciting mix of well-known writers and beginner or new writers, receiving intensive mentoring from Arkbound to get their voices heard. The editor utilised his existing network of contacts and online searches to headhunt a rich diversity of both established and marginalised voices. The book`s introduction is written by climate scientist Dr Bill McGuire (as seen on the BBC), who manages to express the catastrophic state of the planet`s biosphere in scientific but down-to-earth terms, accessible to the general reader. In part one of the book, discussing cognitive frameworks around the climate crisis and societal collapse, several voices associated with the Institute for Social Ecology are included, as a result of the editor`s links with the ISE, most notably the climate justice scholar-activist Brian Tokar. The ISE`s focus on ecological and social justice helps set the tone for the book. Additionally, Steve McNought, founder of Arkbound, includes a chapter on `cognitive revolution`. In part two of the book, Indigenous and ecofeminist responses to climate / societal collapse are featured: unknown but talented voices from Brazil, Sudan, Kenya, Israel-Palestine, Haiti, and South Korea. In part three, the collapse-response strategy is discussed, by authors from the global north, including the well-known (in activist circles) Dr Gail Bradbrook – co-founder of Extinction Rebellion – and Dr Kate Booth & Tristan Sykes of the platform Just Collapse. Overall, aligned with the editor`s perspective, all of the authors in this book share a commitment to localised action and resilience in the face of a very difficult common future, but from diverse biocultural perspectives -because diverse responses to crisis, threaded together by our common humanity, are what could get us through.
