Chemical Engineering: A First Introduction

Autor Thomas Rodgers
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 24 sep 2026
This textbook introduces new chemical engineering students to the key subjects taught in most undergraduate Chemical Engineering degrees: Process Engineering Fundamentals, Chemical Thermodynamics, Process Fluid Flow, Process Heat Transfer, and Chemical Reaction Engineering. Rather than providing total coverage of all these topics, it explains the material in an accessible way for students new to the subject, allowing them to understand why these topics are important and to prepare them for more advanced courses they will encounter later.

• Each chapter begins with learning goals and includes brief examples showing real-world application of the topic.
• Supplies worked examples throughout.
• Provides further tutorial problems as an online resource.
• Offers derivations for key equations to ensure students have a grounded understanding of all topics.
• Provides suggested reading for readers looking to delve deeper into the key subjects covered.

Written for students embarking on their Chemical Engineering degree, this textbook explains core chemical engineering topics in an approachable way, covering basic theory through applications and aims to help students gain valuable insight into their chosen field. Theories and equations are derived from first principles to support full understanding. Further tutorial questions and solutions are available online. The book also offers flexible syllabi: readers can follow the book one subject at a time or can follow a weekly plan for undertaking all subjects concurrently.

Notă biografică

Thomas Rodgers is a Professor of Engineering Education at The University of Manchester. From 2019 to 2022 he was the Head of Education for Chemical Engineering and was responsible for the curriculum design and the running of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the department. He is a European Engineer (EUR ING) as well as a Chartered Fellow of the IChemE and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His research focuses on examining how students learn and prepare for teaching activities, including practical classes. He has a focus on how students interact with teaching materials as well as their engagement with rich-media and online flexible learning materials.
Prior to this he led research on mixing and the scale-up of formulated product manufacturing with several industrial partners. This research focused on real-time on-line measurements during large-scale production and developing practical design correlations for the design of mixing processes.
During his time at the University of Manchester he has taught a wide variety of core chemical engineering subjects across all degree years. Due to this and his teaching developments, he has won numerous teaching awards including, Winner of the 2023 Inclusive and Accessible Teaching Practice Award from the Student’ Union, Winner of the University of Manchester’s 2021, 2024, and 2025 Teaching Excellence Awards and winner of the IChemE’s 2024 Morton Medal.
