Celtic FC was formed in Glasgow by Marist Brother Andrew Kerins (Brother Walfrid) from Ballymote, Sligo in 1888, just 40 years after the Great Famine, in order to raise money to support the post-Famine Irish diaspora with soup kitchens and other charitable endeavours. It was an immediate success, and the charity ethos of the club has remained ever since. In tandem, the football club has become one of the most successful and famous throughout the world.
