The second part of the book features Chloe, blind since her early childhood, that becomes entangled with three separate men, her husband Harold, Ian, and Robert - all scoundrels. Finally she meets an upstanding store keeper, Paul. Willy Madison, Chloe and Harold's son, married the keeper of a brothel in Chicago. He attended the University Medical School but was charged with a murder he did not commit. Eventually Willy and his wife make it to Celery City to begin a life together.
