Lady Iris Everly has everything a girl in Regency England could ask for. Inherited title, wealth, privilege, and storybook dead parents, of course. But then she is betrothed to an elderly knight with terrible manners. Even worse, one morning he has spontaneously transformed into a cow, and everyone thinks she's to blame. Obviously, she has to get away.
Fortunately, a beautiful fairy man appears to fix everything. Unfortunately, the only payment he will accept is her name, which holds all her memories and her identity itself. In the end, she accepts the bargain.
She then wakes up in the beautiful, vibrant realm of Faehaven, where the benevolent fairy lord Ourelio has taken her for safekeeping. Still nameless and disoriented, Ourelio tells her that she is the key he has been waiting for, a partner for breaking the curse plaguing the realm for nearly two thousand years. Still, as she goes through magical trials, she notices that Faehaven isn't the paradise it seems. There isn't enough food to go around, magical creatures are sick and injured, and the magic of the realm is going awry.
Between herself, Ourelio, and the golden-haired baker employed at the manor, she has to help right the realm while figuring out her own identity, now that it has been snatched away from her.
By Any Other Name is a standalone young adult fantasy with a romance subplot and plenty of humor. Great for fans of The Cruel Prince's worldbuilding, My Lady Jane's cheeky narrators, and Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries' antics.
