Buddhism for Non-Buddhists

Autor Ajit Wettasinghe
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 6 sep 2026
You don't have to become a Buddhist to benefit from Buddhist wisdom.
Buddhism for Non-Buddhists is an introduction for readers who want a way of seeing rather than a set of beliefs. Written by a retired psychotherapist with more than twenty-five years of clinical experience, it explains what the Buddha actually taught in plain, unhurried language, and asks the reader to adopt nothing.
The book covers the ground a newcomer needs: why so many people are turning to Buddhism today, whether it is a religion or a psychology, the life of the Buddha as a human story, why life so often feels unsatisfying, impermanence, not-self, the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, meditation, ethics without commandments, and compassion. Later chapters bring these ideas into ordinary life: work, money and success; relationships, love and loss; the major Buddhist traditions explained simply; and how to begin without becoming a Buddhist.
Two things set this book apart. The first is its grounding in clinical psychology. The author spent a career sitting with people in difficulty, and the book connects Buddhist insight to what is now understood about attention, rumination, craving and emotional regulation. The second is its honesty about evidence. Where research supports a claim, the book says so. Where widely repeated findings about meditation and the brain have failed to replicate, it says that too, and a closing section on sources sets out which traditional stories are historically attested and which belong to later tradition.
Each chapter ends with reflection questions rather than instructions. Nothing is prescribed. Nothing is required but attention.
This is a book for the spiritually curious and the institutionally cautious: for readers drawn to Buddhist ideas but wary of belief systems, for those who have tried a meditation app and want to understand where the practice came from, and for anyone meeting loss, uncertainty, or the quiet sense that something is not quite right.
Readers of Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack Kornfield, Stephen Batchelor and Robert Wright will find familiar territory approached from an unfamiliar angle.
How to see clearly, live kindly, and let go.
