Notă biografică
The traditional concept of the university, along with its commitment to the generation of knowledge and the contest of ideas, is being dismantled. Students are dropping out, academics are burning out and governments are tuning out. Policymakers pretend there is equal opportunity, equal access to information and resources, and little structural disadvantage in the market-based system. None of that is true. An education cannot just be ‘delivered’. It is the product of contingent relationships—between the student, teacher, institution, an evolving body of knowledge, and society—that university campuses are uniquely qualified to develop. Australia urgently needs an independent body to manage how our university system serves our national interests, and to support the funding of these institutions as a public good.
