Set during the first contact between the Inca Empire and Spanish explorers, Brave Son is a powerful middle grade historical novel for readers ages 8-14 that brings ancient Peru vividly to life. Manco and his best friend Amaru live in the coastal village of Tumbez, raised in the traditions, values, and laws of the Inca civilization. Their lives are shaped by loyalty, hard work, and dreams of becoming warriors-until the arrival of Francisco Pizarro and his men changes everything. When Amaru is taken by the Spaniards to serve as an interpreter, Manco is left behind to face loss, fear, and the collapse of the world he knows. As war, raids, and political upheaval spread across the land, Manco witnesses the devastating impact of conquest on his people. Separated by forces beyond their control, the boys struggle with questions of identity, loyalty, and moral choice as their paths diverge. Manco must learn that true bravery is not found in weapons or power, but in conscience, compassion, and standing up for what is right. Ideal for classrooms, homeschooling, and independent readers, Brave Son blends historical adventure with meaningful lessons about friendship, courage, and cultural identity, offering an engaging introduction to the Inca civilization and a pivotal moment in world history.
