For decades, David Ryan carried the devastating consequences of childhood sexual abuse at Blackrock College. The trauma shaped his relationships, his identity, and his struggle to find peace. By 2022, he had reached a point where he could see no way forward.
Then an unexpected conversation with his older brother Mark changed everything. When Mark revealed his own abuse and agreed to speak publicly, the brothers began a journey that would transform their lives, leading to the acclaimed RTÉ documentary Blackrock Boys. It broke decades of silence around abuse in Irish schools and inspired thousands of survivors to come forward for the first time.
In this deeply personal memoir, David tells the deeper story of two brothers whose lives were profoundly damaged by abuse, secrecy and institutional failure, but who found strength in truth, solidarity and brotherly love. He recounts the fight for justice, the national reckoning that followed their decision to speak out, and the personal cost of speaking truth to power.
At its heart, Blackrock Boys is a story of survival and resilience. It is also a tribute to Mark, who died suddenly in 2023. From childhood trauma to a historic meeting with the Pope, David's journey shows the extraordinary power of finding and reclaiming your voice.
