After getting married and moving from New York, Alene is plagued with one misfortune after another, eventually plummeting her into a nervous breakdown. The unconditional love of her sister Thelma, now a wealthy retired teacher; is left with no choice but to leave her comfortable home in the Baltimore suburbs and move in with her sister to the inner city projects.
