The author was a British ornithlogist who believed in non-destructive bird study and was consequently strongly opposed to the collection of skins and eggs. He published a variety of natural history works, the majority relating to birds, including children's books and more serious ornithological studies. One of his earlier works, "Bird Watching" was first published in 1901.
