Biomorphic Urbanism
Autor Peter J. Kindelen Limba Engleză Hardback – 31 mar 2027
Unite ecology and culture to shape resilient, sustainable cities
Biomorphic Urbanism: Ecology, Culture & The Design of Cities introduces an innovative and comprehensive urban design methodology, treating natural life and human life as the foundational basis for urban development. It defines each city's unique ecological and cultural history, then prescribes rational, place-sensitive design interventions that deliver both environmental restoration and cultural continuity.
Biomorphic Urbanism draws on 30 years of global professional practice and real-world examples. Over 200 color images illustrate nature-based strategies for climate resilience, land use, and community-building. Historic and contemporary perspectives ground each concept, demonstrating that rich urban environments and healthy ecosystems function as complementary forces within a single coherent planning approach.
Readers will also find:
- Guidance for integrating resilience and nature-based responses to urgent climate challenges facing cities, towns, and regions
- A repeatable process translating each city's distinct ecological and cultural identity into specific, implementable design interventions at multiple scales
- Connections between ecological conservation, cultural representation, and urban form presented as fully complementary rather than oppositional forces
- Strategies applicable from regional master plans to mixed-use neighborhood developments, each informed by local ecological and cultural context
- A design-forward vision for sustainable urbanism accessible to both professional practitioners and engaged non-professional readers alike
Biomorphic Urbanism serves practicing urban designers, landscape architects, city planners, and municipal leaders seeking a place-sensitive alternative to generic sustainability frameworks. Graduate and undergraduate students in architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning will find it equally valuable as a structured methodology grounded in real-world application.
