Biomedical Image Analysis: Biomedical Engineering

Autor Rangaraj M. Rangayyan, Benjamin R. Lavoie
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 12 feb 2027
This book provides extensive details on the mathematical fundamentals, equations, procedures, and algorithms for biomedical image analysis. It presents various approaches towards pattern classification, diagnostic decision making, and computer-aided diagnosis.
Biomedical Image Analysis, Second Edition, introduces the basics of biomedical imaging and characteristics of biomedical images. The authors explain various notions regarding image quality and information content and provide extensive details on filtering images to remove noise as well as for image enhancement and image restoration. The book also explores in detail several methods for image segmentation, detection of regions of interest, and landmarking of medical images. It provides mathematical details of numerous methods for extraction of features and quantitative analysis of shape, texture, and oriented patterns. The book also presents balanced and integrated descriptions of the mathematical, algorithmic, biomedical, clinical, and practical application of biomedical image analysis. The material in the book provides more than adequate resources for a one-semester course giving an introduction to the subject area, as well as an advanced course on medical image analysis and computer-aided diagnosis.
The book is primarily directed at undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate electrical and computer engineering students as well as biomedical and data-analytics students. Practicing engineers, computer scientists, information technologists, medical physicists, and data analysis specialists working in diverse areas such as biomedical applications, informatics, and hospital information systems will also find this book useful in their quest to learn advanced techniques for image analysis

Notă biografică

Rangaraj M. Rangayyan is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His research and teaching are in the areas of Biomedical Signal and Image Analysis and Computer-aided Diagnosis. He has been recognized with the IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineer Medal and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, and elected as Fellow of several societies, including the IEEE, SPIE, and the Royal Society of Canada.
Benjamin R. Lavoie received his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Physics in 2005 and 2007, respectively, from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. He then went on to complete his Ph.D. in Physics in 2012 at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His Ph.D. thesis focused on the electromagnetic theory of waveguides constructed from metamaterials. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Lavoie spent five years as a Postdoctoral Fellow working in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Calgary. During this time, his research work was on image reconstruction and quality assessment methods for medical applications of microwave imaging. In 2017, he received the Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship/Internship, during which time he began working with Aurteen Inc. to develop techniques for quality assessment of retinal images. After completing the internship and Postdoctoral Fellowship, Dr. Lavoie began working as a Research Scientist for Aurteen Inc. developing methods and techniques for retinal image quality assessment and computer-assisted diagnosis of retinopathy. He presently works at Wave View Imaging Inc. developing signal processing and image analysis techniques for medical microwave imaging.
