Conceived by Frank White, this book promotes a biological and ecological approach to taxonomy. Five cases are presented to clearly demonstrate the importance of field research and functional syndromes to studies of the taxonomy and evolution of tropical plants.

Topics covered include pollination, dispersal, ant/plant symbiosis and ecological variation of vegetative characters in different tropical plant families.

Following the death of Dr. White this book was produced as a Festchrift to celebrate his immense contribution to botany.
