Beyond Smart Cities

Autor Nick James, Melissa Kraft
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 12 apr 2027
Move beyond disconnected smart-city projects and learn how to design urban services that can sense changing conditions, compare possible responses, and act within limits people set. This book offers city leaders, planners, and technologists a practical way to imagine more responsive public services without treating autonomy as permission to remove human judgment.
Beginning with data, connectivity, and compute, the book develops a proposed Autonomic Operating System (AOS) as a reference architecture rather than an off-the-shelf product. You will examine how sensing, reasoning, and action layers could support mobility, infrastructure, resilience, public finance, community governance, culture, and work. Real cases are separated from hypothetical scenarios, while evidence gates, operating envelopes, stop conditions, audit trails, and resident remedies keep authority visible.
The final chapters translate the vision into a three-phase Transition Protocol for bounded testing, measured authorization, and durable public ownership. New tools, including the proposed Autonomic Value Index dashboard, help readers connect technical performance to time returned, access improved, harm avoided, and public value demonstrated.
Beyond Smart Cities provides a forward-looking but disciplined guide to building cities that are more adaptive, accounyable, and humane.
