Our love was never the problem. It was always the solution.
My name is David. Most people around here call me Kaelani now.
I used to think my biggest problem was being unremarkable - an ordinary human with an ordinary life in Mirefield. Then I stepped into an alley one night, met a woman running for her life, and everything I thought I knew about "ordinary" fell apart.
Luna wasn't just running from danger; she was running from a lifetime of bigotry and hatred. She was a tiger metamorph - one of several tribes of people who can take animal form, living on the other side of a divide most humans have never bothered to cross with anything but contempt.
I fell in love with her before I understood what that would cost either of us.
Humans and metamorphs don't mix. Not in Neoma, and not without consequence.
Marrying into Luna's world means learning her people's customs, her language of greetings I keep fumbling, and how to act like a tiger. It means earning trust from a community that has every historical reason not to give it to a human. And it means surviving a sister-in-law who has made it her personal mission to see me dead before I get a chance to prove myself.
I'm not a soldier. I'm not a hero. I'm just a man who fell hard for the right woman who went down the wrong alley, and who is now, somehow, responsible for helping defend an entire village from threats I don't fully understand yet - political, supernatural, and otherwise. Rumors of a coming war between our two worlds are getting louder, and somewhere in the middle of it is a prophecy nobody has read correctly.
I'm inexperienced. I'm stubborn. I am unquestionably in over my head.
But I've made Luna a promise, and I intend to keep it: whatever comes for her people, whatever comes for us, I am not about to let anyone turn her life - or the family we're building - into a battlefield.
Between Two Worlds is Book One of The Kaelani Chronicles, a paranormal romance trilogy about love across an impossible divide - and the quiet conviction that some worlds were never meant to stay apart.
Perfect for readers who love fated-mates romance with real emotional stakes, found-family warmth alongside political tension, a human hero in over his head married into a world he's still learning, and slow-burn worldbuilding with a prophecy that isn't what it seems.
The Kaelani Chronicles continues in From Two Worlds (Book Two), with companion stories set alongside the trilogy - including Before the Alley, Lydia's Feasts, and Tales From a Drunken Saint - plus a full audio companion playlist.
The story begins in an alley - and it doesn't let go.
A note for readers: This story explores prejudice, discrimination, and violence between two peoples who've spent generations hating each other - alongside grief, loss, and the hard work of choosing love anyway. Written for adult readers.
