Between the Notes

Eve Mercer is fine.

Or at least that's what she keeps telling herself.

Five months after her marriage ends, she's balancing a demanding career, shared custody of two teenagers, and a life that runs best when everyone-including Eve-sticks to the schedule. Starting over wasn't the plan. Neither was wondering how a life so full could leave so little room for her.

Next door, Gideon Brooks has problems of his own. A working musician in his late forties, his days are filled with students, rehearsals, sessions, and gigs. He makes his living through music, yet somewhere along the way, he stopped believing the music that mattered most could still be his own.

Then Eve hears him playing through their shared wall.

She leaves a note.

He writes back.

Neither knows yet that something has begun.

What follows isn't a chance to erase the lives that came before. It's something quieter: two people in the middle of already complicated lives discovering friendship, desire, music, and the possibility that becoming yourself again doesn't always mean going back.

Sometimes it means listening for what comes next.
