By investigating 19th-century refugees, this book sets out to show that Europe has in the past experienced other crises relating to forced migrations and asylum. The aim is to reconstruct the routes of exile by drawing collective and individual portraits of these refugees from another time. The approach followed, based on the methods of comparative and transnational history, seeks to build up a picture of Europe on the move.
