Donne Avenell (1925-1996) was a British comics writer born in Croydon, Surrey, whose career began before World War II as an assistant editor for Radio Fun. He became a prolific contributor to British adventure comics, writing such popular strips as The Spider, The Phantom Viking, Adam Eterno, and Dr. Mesmer's Revenge. During the 1970s, Avenell co-wrote the Nigerian superhero series Powerman and created scripts for AXA, the post-apocalyptic newspaper strip illustrated by Enrique Badía Romero. He also wrote numerous stories featuring The Phantom and contributed to several internationally published and licensed comic series, establishing a career that spanned multiple decades and genres.Romero, was a Spanish comic-book artist and illustrator born in Barcelona. He began his professional career as a teenager and eventually produced artwork for publishers throughout Spain, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and the United States. Romero became internationally renowned for illustrating Peter O'Donnell's newspaper strip Modesty Blaise, which he first joined in 1970 and later drew for many years, completing more stories than any other artist associated with the character. In 1978, he collaborated with British writer Donne Avenell to create AXA, the post-apocalyptic science-fiction strip about a rebellious female warrior exploring the dangerous world beyond a controlled city. Celebrated for his elegant linework, expressive characters, and glamorous depictions of adventure heroines, Romero also contributed to publications such as 2000 AD and Judge Dredd Megazine, leaving a lasting influence on European and British comics.
